More Than the Time Is Changing

Time to Spring Forward with more than switching to Daylight Savings Time and moving your clocks forward one hour today.

To ensure more timely updates to the FCC Oregon/SW Washington website, we have changed the format of the website to a WordPress blog. This will make it easier for the people who have the information to quickly update the site at www.fcc-oregon.org

The change involves renewing your subscription to the What's New email. In the next day or two you will get an email notifying that the feed location of the email you subscribed to has changed and you will need to confirm that you still want to receive those email updates and/or need to resubscribe in order to keep receiving them or receive them at a different email.

If you use a blog/rss reader (such as Google Reader), you can also opt to add the site to your blog reader instead of receiving email updates.

We hope to be adding more local resources to the site soon. If you have used a therapist or found a cultural resource you have found useful, please let us know.

In summer 2008, JiangSu Broadcasting Corporation (JSBD) and my company filmed a TV series called "Chinese People See the World, Destination - Portland".

The TV crew accidentally met a family with kids adopted from China while they were filming the beautiful Columbia Gorge on the cruise of Portland Spirit. The TV crew did a little on site interview with the family. When the show was aired in China, it touched many Chinese. People were actually asking about them a year and a half later.

SO JSBC decided to work with us again to do a follow up story and explore more stories on this subject "Chinese kids adopted by American family, how they are doing now and how much ties of the two culture are left on the kids living in America" with Chinese audience's curiosity and concern.We are working on a rough script right now.

If you know any other kids adopted from Jiangsu province or any touchy stories, please let us know. The previous show reached 47 million people around the world. Hopefully, this one will do well too.

A Rich Cultural Immersion Experience
July 12th-August 6th, 2010
(3 week language/culture camp, optional 1 week cultural tour)

Each morning campers will engage in Chinese language studies while afternoons will be spent with cultural and recreational activities (Chinese music, tea art, tai chi, calligraphy, etc.), field trips (the Great Wall, agricultural village visit, Beidaihe Beach, etc.), and get-togethers with local junior high and high school students.

August 1 through August 6 (optional)
All inclusive trip to Xian and Beijing for continued learning and experiencing of China's history and culture.

Cost:
1. $50 application fee

2. $665 for 2 weeks language training program at Yanshan University, includes tuition, textbook and teaching materials, accommodations*, field trips and local transportation.
*We provide 2-bedroom apartments; $12pp/day/ bed x 21 days, 4 peopleper apt.

3. $470 for 1 week (OPTIONAL) cultural trip to Xian and Beijing, includesinter-city and local transportation, accommodations, meals and fieldtrip tickets

4. Total of above is only $1185 per person, for 4 weeks! (or just $715 for the first 3 weeks)

Cost does not include:
Refundable Security Deposit for the apartment in Yanshan University($150 refundable), international airfare, Visa application fee, meals during the language portion (meals included during cultural tour), and/or items at traveler's own expense during cultural trip (recommended approx. $50)

Certificates will be awarded at the end of the program for the campers'Chinese language and culture study and their volunteer work in English language training (conversation and socialization with local students).

Our Chinese Daughters Foundation Scholarship

When Our Chinese Daughters Foundation was originally formed in 1995, the first major project we undertook in addition to our newsletter was the publishing of the book New American Families: Chinese Daughters and their Single Mothers.

Later in 2004 OCDF published a second version: Finding Happiness: Single Mothers Share Their China Adoption Stories. Both books are still available through OCDF Publications www.ocdf.org/publications.

When the first book was published, our promise to our supporters, who were then single mothers adopting daughters from China, was that a portion of the proceeds (income after expenses) would be invested into an account from which we would begin offering scholarships in 2010 whereby their child(ren) would be eligible to benefit.

We did invest that money and it is now 2010 - time for Our Chinese Daughters Foundation to begin giving a scholarship to an adopted daughter of a single mother. The purpose of the "Chinese Daughters Scholarship" is to provide annually a combined need-based + merit-based scholarship to an adoptee from China who was raised by a single mother from adoption through college.

One scholarship will be given each year for as long as the funds allow. For eligibility requirements and application form, please visit www.ocdf.org. Deadline for application is postmarked April 1st.

We know and understand there are couples, partners, single dads, and families with both daughters and sons who are long-time and strong supporters of OCDF and this is scholarship is not meant to exclude much-deserving adoptees.

However, this specific fund was established some time ago for a very specific purpose which we are bound to honor. We will work to offer additional scholarship programs that will meet a broader range of adoptive families and their children.

For this particular program the focus must meet the original intent. Thank you for your understanding.

The Northwest Chinese Academy will hold Friday evening open houses to give prospective families the opportunity to learn about and experience Northwest Chinese Academy. Portland Art Museum Presents: China Design Now

China Design Now explores the recent explosion of critically compelling design and architecture projects created in China, contextualizing the impact of rapid economic development on these projects in three of the country’s major cities—Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. This immersive, multi-sensory exhibition captures a dynamic phase in China, as it opens up to global influences and responds to the hopes and dreams of its new urban middle class.

Free Museum Family Day: Sunday, November 8, 12:00-5:00 pm

The third in an ongoing series of free family days will feature Chinese dance, music, and food, along with art-making activities inspired by the three cities featured in China Design Now. Visitors of all ages can build their own cities using recycled materials provided by the School and Community Reuse Action Project (SCRAP).

Museum admission on November 8 and participation in Museum Family Day is free for all visitors.

FCC Waiting Families & First Years Home

Fei Yang, Senior Adoption Coordinator, from A.S.I.A will come and speak to the group about current conditions for China adoption, Waiting Children (special needs), and the new TB requirements for our November Waiting Families.

If you know anyone considering international adoption, interested in knowing more about Waiting Children, or considering whether or not China is a country they want to consider for their adoption, this is the meeting for them and for you. Fei Yang will bring details about all the changes the Hague regulations brought what adoption looks like right now from China.

If we have time, we will allow the time at the end for questions about the Taiwan program, as well. The last half hour of our meeting (4:30pm-5pm) our returning families will come to introduce their children to us and tell us about their recent journeys to China.

BODHI TREE FALL MANDARIN CLASSES FOR ADULTS AND KIDS

For children, Bodhi Tree Learning Center has various levels of Saturday beginner classes starting Sat. Sept 12. The classes meet in mornings or afternoons, for 2 hours a week, 12 weeks.

An afterschool program for children who are already familiar with Chinese (at least 1 year of Chinese) is being offered. The classes meet Tuesdays, Weds., and Thursdays from 4-6 pm.

We also have a Mandarin toddlers class for 2 year olds, and a Mandarin immersion preschool program for 3-6 year olds in both Lake Oswego and SE Portland.

For homeschoolers, we offer classes Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 9:30 to 2:30 pm, in SE Portland.

Fugui and Jiazhen endure tumultuous events in China as their personal fortunes move from wealthy landownership to peasantry. Addicted to gambling, Fugui (Ge You) loses everything. In the years that follow he is pressed into both the nationalist and communist armies, while Jiazhen (Gong Li) is forced into menial work. They raise a family and survive, managing "to live" from the 40's to the 70's in this epic, but personal, story of life through an amazing period. The film is by acclaimed director, Zhang Yimou.

For this month’s film we are fortunate to have visiting PSU Professor Zhan Tianxiang, commenting on the film and participating in the after-film discussion. Prof. Zhan has been coming to PSU from his faculty post at Hangzhou University for many summer sessions, to lecture on Chinese film and current affairs.

Exchange student opportunity

We have several exchange students from China (and also other countries) that
would like to come to the US for high school next year. Here are two of the
students needing a home:

Ru Xue is a 16 year old girl from Guangzhou who will be in 11th grade. Her
favorite subjects are Ancient Chinese Literature and Biology. She says she
is outgoing and is always laughing and talking. She loves young children.
She is looking forward to being your "daughter and friend" and wants to
share her culture and cook some Chinese food for you. Her teachers says she
is easygoing, cooperative and always ready to help and feels confident she
will easily make friends with new classmates. She is a strong student and
scored well on her English proficiency test.

Sheng is a 16 year old girl from Shanghai who will be in the 11th grade.
Her parents are both doctors and her favorite subjects are Chinese and
English. She says she not only has a strong interest in languages but also
in the civilization behind it. She is a hard worker and leader in many
school activities. Her teacher says she has a high sense of responsibility
as well as a pleasant mature attitude and good interpersonal relationships
with her classmates. She also scored well on her English proficiency test
and is a strong student with mostly A's. She likes young children. She is
hoping the coming year will provide "a nice and unforgettable memory for
each other".

Host families provide a place to stay, students can share a room with a same
sex child but need their own bed. Families provide meals at home (and sack
lunches if desired) but students bring money for all other expenses and have
health insurance. They are not allowed to drive. And it should be a
wonderful opportunity to share US culture with the student and for you to
learn more about China.

Experience true intercultural exchange within your own home

A group of middle and high school aged Chinese students are coming to our
Lake Oswego community to learn about American culture for two weeks this
summer. This is a fun opportunity to bring the Chinese culture into our
families and community.

Compass USA Homestay (www.compass-usa.net) are currently looking for
families to open their hearts and homes to these students. During the two
week program, the students will participate in English and cultural
classes, as well as afternoon and full day activities. Your part includes
providing a bed to sleep, meals and a place in your family for two weeks!

This comprehensive series is designed to meet most recommended pre-adoption education requirements for international or domestic adoption or to supplement agency trainings. We believe history is important in defining the issues adoptive children face and creating positive outcomes.

Successful parenting comes from being fully aware and prepared for potential difficult issues that some families may face. Our goal is to provide participants with tools and resources for the lifelong adventure of being an adoptive family.

This 10 hour curriculum (separated into two workshops) includes:

. Adoption in the U.S.A.

. Becoming an adoptive family

. The attachment process, parental claiming, and bonding

. Communicating with and advocating for your child

. Lifelong issues of adoption

. Nurture vs. Nature

. Adoptism, racism, and diversity in the U.S. culture

. Preparing for the first hours and days of being an adoptive family

Presenter: Mina Bacigalupi, a co-founder of Adoption Mosaic and a pediatric
nurse, has worked and volunteered in the field of adoption for over twelve years. She and her husband adopted their daughter from China and their son domestically.

Cost: $250 per family for the series (singles are encouraged to bring a
support person)

Lake Oswego Chinese Immersion Preschool Opening June 2

The Bodhi Tree Center is pleased to announce that starting June 2, 2009, we will offer a second location of our Mandarin Chinese Immersion Preschool, in Lake Oswego -- 1111 Country Club Road, Lake Oswego, OR 97034 (at the United Church of Christ)). Easter Bunny Training Camp!

Come learn the art of the traditional Easter Egg Hunt in a safe environment. Depending on the number of kids, we may split into a couple of groups based on age and ability. a Chinese Immersion Program will start next fall at Franklin Elementary School in West Vancouver.

The Vancouver School District plans to have full-day kindergarten taught mostly in Chinese. Parents are asked to commit to the full five years. The first year, it costs $2,900, the difference between half and full-day kindergarten. In subsequent years, there's no tuition charge. Kids in the Franklin district have first preference, then other VSD kids, then from outside the district. This looks very good, but it's only for kindergarteners. They said the whole school will learn about Chinese culture, so that might be good for older kids. The school people said they hope to eventually offer Chinese at other levels all the way through high school.

More meetings about this will be held at 6:30 p.m. on March 24 and April 21 at Franklin. You can apply as early as March 3. They'll have a lottery if too many kids apply, though they might add a second class if the demand is high enough.

The Prince of Peace Foundation is happy to officially open registration for the 2009 China Cultural Trip. We are very pleased to share that the China Language Educational Foundation will be heavily subsidizing the cost of this trip, and it will only cost $700 per adult / $400 per child (age 10-17) for travel within China. WAITING FAMILIES MEETING ON MELAMINE FEB. 8

The Waiting Families group is meeting at a new location on Sunday, February 8. (NOT the first Sunday of the month-We skipped for Super bowl weekend.)

Our topic is an important one, the recent milk and formula contamination in China (children have been affected who were adopted as far back as 2004). We have Doctor Meg Hayes, an international adoption pediatrician, speaking to our group about potential ramifications to our kiddos, tests, and how the medical community is addressing this. We are opening this meeting to anyone who would like to attend in the FCC community.

Families with Children from China Oregon and SW Washington is a 501(c3) completely volunteer run, and almost exclusively member funded, organization. 2008 has been a tough year for all of us financially, including FCC. FCC experienced significant and unexpected expenses in Fiscal Year 2007 and the beginning of 2008. As a result, the Board has undergone a considerable amount of effort to build out the proper infrastructure and position the FCC for long-term viability since the beginning of the new fiscal year.

2009 CHINA CULTURAL TOUR

POP's Foundation will host their 2nd China Cultural Trip in June 2009. In this economy, many people may be hesitant to travel, so they are glad that the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council of the People's Republic of China and the Chinese Language and Culture Education Foundation will subsidize the cost of the trip this time. They will inform everyone with more details on the cost as soon as possible. As of now, the tentative date is set for June 19th, 2009. They plan to visit Beijing, Tianjin, the May 12th earthquake zone in Sichuan, and Yunnan, if possible. Since some of the places they intend to visit are not open to the public, they can only accommodate 150 people on this trip. There is a 10-year-old age requirement for the children to attend, just as last time.

JANE BROWN WORKSHOPS IN EUGENE NOV. 7-9

What do children think about their adoption stories? What tools can we give them to combat teasing, impertinent questions, and racism? Adoption Connections of Oregon (ACO) is hosting the creator of Adoption Playshops, Jane Brown, at its 7th Annual Conference November 7 – 9, 2008 in Eugene, Oregon.

Learn how children's understanding of adoption, race, and ethnicity unfolds developmentally at different ages and stages, and what adoptive parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, educators, social workers and caretakers can and should do to help them through developing specialized skills that address the topics of loss and grief, racial differences, ethnic backgrounds, and culture-of-origin differences. Children Playshops give children five years and older, an opportunity to explore their own ideas about adoption and to interact with their peers. Jane uses multi-sensory games with props and puppets to let the children talk, learn about, and discuss their feelings about being adopted. She helps children understand that the questions and thoughts they have about adoption are normal and okay to talk about with their adopted peers and lets them acquire skills they can transfer to settings with non-adopted peers.

OUR CHINESE DAUGHTER FOUNDATION EXPLORE A PROVINCE BOOKS

Our Chinese Daughters Foundation (OCDF) has embarked on a rather spendy yet important project -Explore-A-Province in China book series. We're creating one hard back book for each province in China. These 64-page hardback books are really nice, full of great color photos, informative, and interestingfor our kids to have since there is nothing available such as this on each province in China.

In order for this project to be a success, we need your help! Each book costs $26.00 and is available from OCDF by phone and online www.ocdf.org/publications. Call 309-829-8202 or 1-866-460-OCDF toll free or email lynn@ocdf.org

Right now we have Anhui Province and Shanghai Municipality done, the first two books. Next to the printer will be Jiangsu and Fujian Provinces. We have printed 1,000 copies of each book. We need to sell more of the 1,000 copies we have of the Anhui and Shanghai books in order to continue the project and have books on all the provinces. It's not a quick process! We need your help in making sure that it can be successful and continue! Lynn is keeping a list of those families who want future books so that she can let you know as soon as your province is ready.

CHINA HOMELAND TOURS 2009

Chinese Cultural Exchange & Homeland Tours are taking registrations for their 2009 China Homeland Tours.

China Highlights (6/19-7/2, 2009 & 7/17-7/30, 2009) will include Beijing, Xi'an (Terra Cotta Warriors), Guilin, Yangshuo (Li River Cruise), Guangzhou, plus orphanage visit. We will visit Beijing Olympic Venues, including the Bird's nest, Beijing National Stadium and the Water Cube. We will spend some time with local families, visit China's most famous peasant's artist village. Our kids will learn some traditional games in the evenings with Chinese children. Westside Mandarin Immersion Efforts Continue

A lot of you have heard that there is a group of folks pushing Portland Public Schools to create a second Mandarin Immersion program within the PPS boundaries. We’re hoping to get a school established on the Westside of Portland. Talks on this effort have been going on for 2 years and we’re hoping to see some results this year.

We would like to get as many parents interested in the creation of a second Mandarin Immersion school to sign the petition found on the effort’s website http://chinese.weareahappyfamily.com./ The more names we can get signed up the more PPS will listen to us. So if you haven’t done so already, and you would like to see another Mandarin 1/2 day Immersion program established, please sign your name to the website.

The Bodhi Language Center will be holding Open House for families interested in immersing their children in Mandarin Chinese starting in the fall. The Open House is Saturday, August 2 and 16, from 10:30 - 11:30 am.

The Bodhi Tree Language Center is a full-service Asian languages center offering classes and services for children, adults, and business in various Asian languages, including Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Thai, Lao, and Tibetan. CHINESE MEDICINE SEMINAR JUNE 29TH

Chinese Medicine, an ancient art that stems from Chinese philosophy and culture, is the medicine that has its unique approach for health care and treatment of diseases, especially attaching great importance to the relationship between human being and nature. Dr. Guohui Liu, a Chinese medicine practitioner for over 30 years, and an adjunct faculty of both Oregon College of Oriental Medicine and National College of Natural Medicine, will give a brief discussion of relationship among Chinese Medicine, ancient Chinese culture and philosophy and explore its advantage and disadvantage for modern diseases based on his research and clinical practice. He will also answer questions you might have regarding Chinese medicine and other health related concerns.

CANTONESE CLASS FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS

Cantonese Language for Children/Adults -- Beginners, Level 1.
July 12-Aug 30, 2008 (Saturdays), 3:30-5:30 pm

This class -- which meets once a week for 8 weeks -- concentrates on correct pronunciation, and speaking and listening of Cantonese. Some characters may be introduced, but the focus of the class is on conversation. Class is geared to children, but adults are also welcome. The class provides an important foundation for further studies in the language. The teacher is a native speaker of Cantonese, with many years teaching experience, and excellent English. Classes are kept small. We fill seats on a first-register basis.

CHINESE LANGUAGE CLASSES IN YAMHILL COUNTY

We are in the beginning stages of starting up classes in McMinnville. I am currently working with a local Chinese family who are interested in teaching the class, which will include learning the Mandarin language and the Chinese culture. They have asked me to post to find out if there are any other families interested in having their children attend. If there are, then we will proceed on finding a public location (library, school or community center) where classes can begin in September.

Hilltop Christian School (on Dosch and Beaverton-Hillsdale Rd) offers a Mandarin class for children ages 3-6. They offer a Level 1 class for 1 hour, once a week after the regular preschool and will be offering a Level II class for Kindergarteners also after school. They’re making it so children who might not attend Hilltop can attend these classes. It's a great opportunity to keep our little ones exposed to their birth country’s language.

Please join the Vancouver Chinese Association for a candlelight vigil for the Sichuan earthquake disaster.

To mourn the many lost lives in Sichuan earthquake, a candlelight vigil will be held at Fishers Basin Park in Vancouver WA this Wednesday evening, May 20th, 2008 at 7:30 pm. A voluntary donation will follow afterwards. The sealed donation box will be sent to a nearby bank by 3 members of the community the next day and opened by the bank cashier. The fund will be wired directly to the International Red Cross in China (http://www.redcross.org.cn/).

This event is organized by Vancouver Chinese Association. For questions and directions, please call Liying Zheng, secretary of Vancouver Chinese Association at 360 910-4714. This master class is intentionally to present a clear concept of artistic image making. Master Qian will instruct students on how to improve their abilities of observation, three dimensional modeling images and artistic treatments by understanding of the concept of image making.

Mr. Qian was born in Shanghai, China and received a BA degree from Shanghai Normal University and a MFA degree from Portland State University. The MFA degree is equivalent to a Ph.D degree in other fields as it is the highest degree that can be earned in the area of studio art. His works have been published and shown around the world in the past two decades. Mr. Qian has been profiled in Who’s Who in the World in the last 7 years. He has worked as an art editor for a magazine, a faculty member of an art college, an art director of a ceramic art company, and currently a senior artist of Carol Wilson fine arts Inc. Mr. Qian has recently published the book "The Art of Zifen Qian.
